Registered Nurse (Medsurg RN)

Location: Norfolk, Nebraska
Contract Length: 11 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Unit: Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)
  • Bed count: 38
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6 for both day and night shifts; must be able to manage up to 6 patients
  • Patient types: Adults and older teens with a variety of diagnoses including pneumonia, UTI, dehydration, influenza, alcohol withdrawal, respiratory viruses, orthopedic surgeries (hips, knees, shoulder), general surgeries (appendix, gallbladder, bowel), spinal surgeries (laminectomy, spinal fusions), and urology cases

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Current RN license for Medsurg specialty
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • BLS certification (AHA or ARC) required
  • Experience with EPIC electronic documentation system
  • Ability to perform bedside shift report
  • Must be able to manage a 1:6 patient ratio
  • Experience with the shift applied for (day or night) preferred
  • Ability to titrate drips (e.g., Heparin, Bumex, Lasix)
  • Comfortable working with cardiac telemetry tech support; RNs are not required to interpret telemetry strips themselves

Work Environment & Support

  • Cardiac telemetry tech available 24/7
  • Nursing supervisor available 24/7
  • Charge nurses on day shift (two, generally do not take patients) and night shift (one, does not take patients)
  • Nurse aides available with ratios of 1:8-10, able to perform accuchecks and vital signs
  • Respiratory therapy support available 24/7; equipment includes tracheostomy care, CPAP for OSA, BiPAP, and occasional high flow oxygen

Scheduling & Shift Details

  • Shifts: Days and nights, 12 hours per shift, approximately 36 hours per week
  • No self-scheduling for travel RNs; blocked scheduling may be accommodated occasionally
  • Weekend and holiday work as needed
  • Call or standby required during low census or cancellations
  • Floating to Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) for Med Surg assignments may be required

Orientation & Dress Code

  • Unit-specific orientation: 1.5 shifts
  • Scrub color: Navy blue (scrubs provided)

Additional Notes

  • High turnover on day shifts; discharges typically followed by admissions
  • Emphasis on teamwork, proactive patient rounding, and assisting with call lights
  • Must be adaptable and able to work collaboratively with CNAs
