Registered Nurse (RN) – Acute Care Med Surg

Location: Albany, Georgia
Contract Length: 17 weeks
Shift: Nights (7 PM – 7 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (3 shifts per week)
Unit: Med Surg – Admission Hold / Discharge Pending Patients
Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:5
Beds on Unit: 14


Job Description

  • Provide care for Admission Hold Patients (patients in ED awaiting medical beds), Overflow patients (medical observation status), and Discharge Pending Patients (awaiting transport, DME, or medications).
  • Care excludes patients requiring IV drips such as Cardizem, amiodarone, milrinone, dobutamine, insulin, or patients with active isolation precautions, inmates, PACU, or MedOps patients.
  • Administer medications both IV and PO as ordered for Admission Hold Patients; for Discharge Pending Patients, provide basic care including PO medications, pain control, blood sugar monitoring, nourishment, complex toileting assistance, and oxygen via nasal cannula.
  • No titration of drips required by RNs on this unit.
  • Charge Nurse may take patient assignments.
  • One CNA supports the unit.
  • No telemetry or monitor techs; RNs do not read their own strips.
  • Potential floating to Med Surg unit if census is low.
  • Unit is closed on weekends; weekend work is every other weekend on a different unit.
  • Holiday work only if it falls on a weekday.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Acute Care Med Surg specialty.
  • Must have completed at least 1 prior travel assignment.
  • Current Georgia RN license.
  • BLS certification required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required.
  • Basic Med Surg nursing skills; some cardiac skills preferred.

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Unit-specific orientation typically 3 shifts.
  • Monday through Friday schedule, 12-hour night shifts (7 PM – 7 AM).
  • Caribbean Blue and white scrubs dress code (specific combinations required).

Additional Information

  • Strict 75-mile radius commuting rule enforced.
  • Common drips on the Med Surg floor include heparin and lasix (no titration by RN on this unit).
  • Albany, GA is a city of approximately 80,000 residents, located 175 miles from Atlanta.
  • Housing options in gated, safe, and clean communities are available nearby.
