Job Details
- Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Unit
- Location: Peoria, Illinois
- Contract Length: 26 weeks
- Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 07:00 - 19:30)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Unit Beds: 70
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
- Nights: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating schedule including major holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day)
- Call/Standby: None currently required
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one, depending on prior experience at the facility
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses: Myocardial infarction (MI), congestive heart failure (CHF), atrial fibrillation, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
- RN responsibilities include medication titration (mainly Cardizem and heparin drips) and EKG interpretation
- RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
- Respiratory equipment: CPAP, BiPAP (if part of patient’s home regimen), heated high flow oxygen only in special COVID cases
- Charge nurse present 24/7, rarely takes patient assignments
- House supervisor present 24/7
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) support nursing with ratios:
- Days: 1 PCT to 8-9 patients
- Evenings: 1 PCT to 9-10 patients
- Nights: 1 PCT to 10-12 patients
Required Certifications & Skills
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA) required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) recommended
- Experience with EKG interpretation and medication titration required
- Must be able to titrate drips as part of RN duties
Additional Requirements
- Must comply with a drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen for all panels
- Local candidates within a 50-mile radius are accepted
- Submission requirements include last four digits of SSN, middle initial, and requested time off
