Unit Details

• Unit: Neuro ICU (McAuley ICU)
• Number of Beds: 20
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
• EMR System: Cerner
• Charge Nurse Role: Yes; generally does not take patients but provides break relief
• Nurse Aides: Available as Safety Attendants (sitters)
• Telemetry: Yes; must be able to read and interpret EKG strips
• Ventilator Patients: Yes
• Hospitalist or Intensivist: In-house coverage
• Respiratory Therapist: Available 24/7
• Pharmacy: ICU Pharmacy open during dayshift, pharmacy available 24/7
• Floating: First to float to sister facilities; mid-shift float is rare but possible
• Orientation: 1-2 days floor-specific orientation with preceptor
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Stroke (CVA), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICB), neuro surgeries, craniotomies, neuro interventional radiology, ventriculostomies, frequent line insertions
• Unit Features: Strong Stroke Program and Neuro Center; newer, state-of-the-art unit

Schedule & Work Environment

• Shift Start Time: 6:45 PM
• Report: At bedside
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Rotate with core staff
• Scrub Color: Navy (under shirts must be navy, white, or black; scrub jackets optional but must be navy)
• Overtime and Extra Shifts: Available
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling with manager final approval; schedules released 4 weeks in advance; travelers can access schedules remotely and trade shifts; block scheduling generally not available

Required Qualifications

• Active California RN License
• Minimum 2 years Neuro ICU nursing experience (preferred)
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Ability to read and interpret EKG strips (Telemetry skills)
• Must provide 2 supervisory references at time of submittal (one within past 12 months, one within past 3 years)
• Valid government-issued ID matching legal name on application (no middle initials or names)
• Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with the specified health system within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required

Pre-Contract Requirements

• Must complete a Dys Exam through UNA within 24-48 hours prior to contract signing (pass/fail with 2 attempts allowed; minimum score 80%)
• Failure on second attempt disqualifies candidate from certain locations
