Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult Medical Specialty Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun for days)
Holiday Requirement: Varies
Scheduling: 3-12 hour shifts, self-scheduling/block scheduling via electronic system
Floating: Rotation to other acute care general medical areas (nephrology, neuro, ortho, oncology)
Unit Details
- 56 beds (private and semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:4-5 (7:00 AM – 11:00 PM)
- 1:5-6 (11:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient Care Techs (PCTs) assist with vital signs, accu-checks, bladder scans, and ADLs; ratio 1:8-10
- Free charge nurse on each floor who does not take patient assignments
- House-wide telemetry monitored remotely; RNs can view strips on monitors or computers (Phillips brand)
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes BiPAP/CPAP for sleep apnea, inhalers, and suctioning
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Acute care general medical patients with conditions such as:
- Cellulitis
- Sepsis
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Syncope
- Anemia
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Acute respiratory failure
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure
- Behavioral health and addictions
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, and chest tubes preferred
- EPIC electronic health record experience preferred
- Travel nursing experience on a MedSurg floor preferred
- Candidates with Level I trauma center experience considered without travel experience if EPIC experience is present
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Common drips used: Heparin, Lasix
Orientation & Policies
- Unit-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- No call or standby requirement
- Dress code: Any color professional scrubs; no visible tattoos or piercings except ears
- Drug-free campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
Licensure & Submission Requirements
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- Submission requires last four digits of SSN, middle initial, and requested time off
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Call-off policy allows equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
