Job Details

• Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 48 hours per week
• Location: Omaha, Nebraska
• Facility Type: Level I Trauma Center, Pediatric Certified by State, Comprehensive Stroke Center
• Unit Details:

  • 20 beds total (5 Trauma, 10 Observation, hallway beds)
  • Fast Track area with 6 beds
  • Separate triage area with 3 beds
  • Security staffed in-house 24/7 within the ER
• Patient Care Ratios:

  • 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio in zones
  • 1:6 in Fast Track
  • 1:5 in Observation
  • 1:1 in ICU/Trauma
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Trauma, sepsis, chest pain, shortness of breath, strokes (including TPA administration)
• Common Drips: All common drips used in Level I trauma ERs
• Staffing:

  • Both ED physicians and mid-level providers are staffed
  • Charge nurse present on each shift
  • Nurse aides, EMTs, paramedics, and patient sitters present with ratios of 1:10 in Observation and 1:20 in main ED
  • Telemetry/Monitor techs present; RNs are required to read and interpret their own cardiac strips
• Floating: Required to float to Observation unit and a freestanding ER at least once a week
• Orientation: 1 week onboarding, plus 2 shifts at one hospital and 1 shift at another facility
• Work Environment: Fast paced, high acuity

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred but not required

Required Qualifications

• Recent experience in Level 1 or Level 2 trauma care is required
• Valid driver’s license required at time of application (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
• Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, based on skills learned)
• Compliance with fingernail policy: artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination

Scheduling and Requirements

• Shifts available: 07:00-19:00, 09:00-21:00, 11:00-23:00, 15:00-03:00, 19:00-07:00 (night shift focus)
• Weekend and holiday work requirements vary based on department needs
• Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days or less from contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
• Candidates may not currently be employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system within a 50-mile radius

• This position requires a high level of trauma nursing skill and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
• Nurses must be able to interpret cardiac monitor strips independently
