Registered Nurse (RN) - Trauma ICU
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Trauma ICU
- Unit Size: 18 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 1:4
- Patient Population: Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
- Common Diagnoses: Various trauma injuries (Level 1 trauma center), sepsis, stroke, ARDS, MODS, COPD, cardiac arrest
- Equipment & Monitoring:
- CVPs, IABP, Impella (core staff will take if no experience)
- Arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
- Zoll-Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol, Bell Mont rapid transfuse
- Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry; RNs must read and interpret strips
- Respiratory Equipment: Nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot vents, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow
- Drip Management: RNs required to titrate vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, antiarrhythmics
- Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
- Support Staff: Nurse aides/patient care techs with a ratio of 1:18
- Floating: Required to float to inpatient units excluding Maternity and NICU
Schedule & Orientation
- Shifts: 0630-1830 and 1830-0630 (12-hour shifts)
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling managed by unit manager based on needs
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
- Orientation: 2 unit-specific shifts
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved
Required Qualifications
- Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS required
- Experience: Must not be a first-time traveler (prior travel experience required)
- Background: No license or background issues allowed
- Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify distance compliance
- Exam: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; minimum 90% to pass
- Compliance: Artificial nails prohibited; refusal to comply may result in contract termination
Additional Notes
- Fast-paced environment with critically ill patients
- Successful nurses demonstrate critical thinking, a positive attitude, personable nature, and teamwork skills
- Candidates must live within a 50-mile radius and cannot currently work full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated facilities
This position is ideal for experienced Trauma ICU RNs who have prior travel contract experience and are comfortable managing complex critical care patients in a high-acuity setting.
