ICU Nurse Opportunity - Chandler Regional Medical Center, Chandler, AZ
Position Overview
- Requires 3 full years of recent ICU experience (no exceptions).
- Experience must include either neuro or cardiovascular (CV) ICU.
- Active certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and valid Arizona or compact nursing license.
- TNCC certification preferred.
- Travelers may float to sister facility Mercy Gilbert if needed.
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam (max 2 attempts) 24-48 hours prior to acceptance.
- Pass/fail Sim Lab on Day 1 of orientation (study guides provided).
- Flexibility required; typically every other weekend, but may need to work up to 3 weekends per month if unit is busy.
- Self-scheduling available; manager may balance shifts based on unit needs.
- No additional call or standby shifts required, but may be low censused up to 3 times per contract.
ICU Units & Patient Care
Surgical ICU - Trauma Neuro Surgery
- Beds: 32
- Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:2 or 1:1
- Level 1 Trauma Center with patients including falls, gunshot wounds, blunt trauma, MVAs, trauma patients over age 15.
- Common cases: Ex-lap, craniotomy, specialty neuro-surgery, CVA, post-TPA, COVID, sepsis, ARDS.
- RNs required to titrate drips.
- Common drips: Propofol, fentanyl, versed, precedex, morphine, dilaudid, ketamine, rocuronium, levophed, vasopressin, cardene, labetalol, dopamine, dobutamine, heparin, insulin.
- Charge nurse role available (does not take patients).
- No nurse aides on unit; sitters and Health Unit Secretary available.
- Hospitalist or Intensivist coverage 24/7.
- Respiratory Therapist (RT) coverage 24/7.
- Ventilator/RT equipment: Dreager, Hamilton, Puritan Bennett 840, V60s BiPAP, Airvo.
- No tele/monitor techs; RNs interpret their own cardiac strips using GE monitors.
Medical ICU - Medical Cardiac + Overflow
- Beds: 36 Medical Cardiac + 12 overflow
- Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:2 or 1:1
- Common diagnoses: Sepsis, COVID, CRRT (not required), DKA, flu, ARDS, vascular surgeries.
- CVICU cases: On/off pump CABG, valve surgeries, post-cath, TAVR, IABP, Impella, ECMO (new as of 3/2022), Tandem Heart, esophagectomies.
- RNs required to titrate drips (same as Surgical ICU).
- Charge nurse role available (does not take patients).
- No nurse aides on unit; sitters and Health Unit Secretary available.
- Hospitalist or Intensivist coverage 24/7.
- RT coverage 24/7 with same equipment as Surgical ICU.
- No tele/monitor techs; RNs interpret their own cardiac strips using GE monitors.
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts: Self-scheduling with manager oversight.
- Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule.
- Night shift weekends: Friday-Saturday
- Day shift weekends: Saturday-Sunday
- May have 1 holiday off per assignment.
- No additional call or standby shifts.
- Floating: Expected to float between all 3 ICUs (Surgical ICU, Medical Cardiac ICU, and overflow units) and to telemetry units with 1:3 or 1:4 nurse:patient ratios as needed.
- Scrub color: Navy.
- Orientation: 1-2 days, unit/department specific.
- Skills validation for trauma, neuro, and specialty devices as needed.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year.
- First-time travelers are welcome if they meet experience requirements.
- Preference for candidates with prior experience in similar-sized ICU units.
- Level 1 trauma or neuro ICU experience preferred but not required.
- Radius rule: 50 miles.
This position offers a challenging and rewarding ICU nursing opportunity in a Level 1 trauma center with diverse patient populations and advanced technology. Strong critical care skills, flexibility, and the ability to work independently interpreting cardiac rhythms are essential.
