Labor & Delivery RN Opportunity - Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Intro to Fetal Monitoring
Key Requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license at time of submittal (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles)
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
- Must be able to circulate in the OR
- Competency in normal newborn assessments and routine baby care required
- Will float occasionally to Postpartum and may serve as a sitter on the unit
Department Details
- Labor & Delivery unit with:
- 16 labor rooms
- 9 antepartum rooms
- 3 OR suites for C-sections
- 7 triage beds (for patients >20 weeks pregnant with complaints)
- 36 postpartum beds
- Up to 400 births per month
- Follows AWHONN guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:1-2 for laboring patients
- 1:2-3 for antepartum patients
Patient Population
- High-risk obstetrics and routine obstetric care
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips such as:
- Pitocin
- Magnesium Sulfate
- Pain medications
- Use of respiratory equipment limited to nasal cannula troubleshooting
- Telemetry monitoring in recovery after C-section; RNs do not read their own strips
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: Obix
Staffing & Support
- Charge nurse on each shift who also takes patient assignments
- 2 Obstetric Technicians (OBTs) per shift assisting with duties
- 24/7 in-house coverage by:
- 3 OB residents and 1 supervising MD
- CRNAs providing anesthesia coverage
Scheduling
- Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700 (12-hour shifts)
- Weekend requirement: Every 3rd weekend, possibly every other weekend depending on unit needs
- Holiday requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday per contract
- Floating: Postpartum unit and occasional sitter duties on the house
Orientation & Dress Code
- Unit-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts
- Surgical scrubs provided
