Description
The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) independently performs moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA). This role is responsible for conducting routine and specialized technical analyses to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The MLS operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation, applies advanced critical thinking to resolve technical issues, and ensures quality, accuracy, and compliance in all testing processes. Additionally, the MLS serves as a resource to laboratory staff, supports training and education, and contributes to continuous improvement and patient care excellence.
What you will do
- Perform routine and complex laboratory testing with accuracy and efficiency in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Analyze, interpret, and validate test results for clinical use in patient diagnosis and treatment.
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Identify and resolve technical, procedural, and quality-related issues using independent judgment.
- Ensure compliance with quality control, quality assurance, infection control, and safety standards.
- Organize and prioritize workload to meet turnaround times and laboratory performance expectations.
- Serve as a resource to Medical Laboratory Technicians and other staff by providing guidance and technical expertise.
- Participate in training, orientation, and competency development of new employees and students.
- Assist in evaluation and implementation of new procedures, methodologies, and instrumentation.
- Support laboratory operations by maintaining supplies, adhering to organizational policies, and promoting a collaborative, patient-focused environment.

Experience Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology or related area required.
- Recent graduates from accredited programs are welcome.
- Must be currently licensed as a Medical Technologist by the State of Florida Department of Health.
Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory testing methodologies, disease processes, and diagnostic applications across assigned laboratory sections.
- Strong understanding of CAP, CLIA, and laboratory accreditation standards, including quality control, quality assurance, and safety practices.
- Expertise in operating, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex laboratory instruments and systems.
- Ability to independently analyze test results, identify discrepancies, and resolve complex technical issues.
- Capability to mentor Medical Laboratory Technicians and students, and to assume lead or charge responsibilities as needed.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical information and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams.
