Unit Information

Unit: CC96171 | 17 East and West, Medical Oncology and Benign Hematology

Location: City, State

Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (19:00 - 07:30)

Scheduling Type: Self-scheduling with block schedules available

Float Required: Yes, to other MedSurg Oncology units

Position Overview

We are seeking a Registered Nurse to join our team in the Medical Oncology and Benign Hematology unit. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of relevant experience, with a strong willingness to learn and grow within their nursing practice.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year of current specialty experience within the last 3 years
• Oncology experience preferred but not required
• Certifications:
  • BLS required
  • ONS Chemo preferred
• Skills:
  • Telemetry Interpretation and Monitoring
  • IV therapy and Phlebotomy experience required
  • Accessing and managing ports*
  • Administering blood products
  • Starting and maintaining IVs
  • Oncology administration of chemotherapy preferred*
  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response experience
  • Isolation precautions and PPE
  • Tracheostomy care and management*

Patient Care

Our unit cares for adults and geriatrics, handling a variety of common diagnoses including:

• Breast Cancer
• Lung Cancer
• Prostate Cancer
• Pancreatic Cancer
• Colon Cancer
• Esophageal Cancer
• Encounters for antineoplastic chemotherapy

Daily Operations

The unit accommodates a daily census of approximately 36 patients, organized in 36 rooms and beds. Staff ratios aim for 1:4 but may reach 1:5 depending on patient needs. Interdisciplinary support includes:

• Physical Therapy
• Respiratory Services
• Interpretation Services
• Radiology
• Social Services
• Rapid Response Teams
• Pharmacy
• Transportation
• Unit Secretary

Orientation and Training

Orientation consists of 72 hours: the first week includes day shifts from Monday to Friday, and the second week consists of 36 hours of on-unit training with a preceptor.

Additional Information

Special focus is placed on infection prevention protocols and patient safety, including fall prevention. Familiarity with specialized equipment such as B450 monitors, Alaris pumps, and Stryker beds is beneficial.
