Job Summary: The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a direct care provider who possesses the knowledge and skills required for the delivery of safe, competent, anesthesia care. Within this role, the CRNA provides anesthesia for general, regional and sedation cases. The process begins with a thorough pre-operative evaluation, continues with intra-operative care management and extends through transition of care to the post-operative healthcare provider. CRNA’s practice according to their expertise, state statutes/regulations and institutional policy. This position reports to the Division of Nursing and Physician Services.Essential Functions &amp; Responsibilities:<ul><li>Performing and documenting a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation, including requesting consultations and diagnostic studies; selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering pre-anesthetic medications and fluids; and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.</li><li>Developing and implementing an anesthetic plan.</li><li>Initiating the anesthetic technique which may include: general, regional, local and sedation.</li><li>Selecting, applying, and inserting appropriate invasive and noninvasive monitoring modalities for continuous evaluation of the patient’s physical condition.</li><li>Selecting, obtaining, and administering the anesthetics, adjuvant and accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic.</li><li>Performing and managing regional anesthesia techniques including, but not limited to subarachnoid and epidural blocks; plexus, major and peripheral nerve blocks, intravenous regional anesthesia; trans-tracheal, topical and local infiltration blocks.</li><li>Obtaining and preparing all equipment, monitors, supplies, and medications required for the administration of anesthesia. Performing equipment safety checks as per unit guidelines.</li><li>Managing the patient’s airway and pulmonary status using current practice modalities.</li><li>Facilitating emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support.</li><li>Providing a thorough transition of care to the post-surgical care provider.</li><li>The CRNA is proficient in caring for pediatric, adult and geriatric patient populations.</li><li>Accepting additional responsibilities that are appropriate within the expertise of the individual CRNA and are appropriate to the practice setting.</li><li>Responding to emergency situations providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.</li><li>The delivery of quality anesthesia services that are founded in scientific research, reflective of current standards, evidence based and cost-efficient.</li><li>The CRNA maintains accurate, legible and confidential records.</li></ul>Other Functions: The CRNA will participate in activities that enhance and develop professional growth.<ul><li>Participating in self-directed continuing education for the maintenance of certification and to maintain a clinical knowledge base that is reflective of current practice standards.</li><li>Participating in performance improvement directives as delineated by the hospital and/or department.</li><li>Functioning as a preceptor for new employees and students from Nurse Anesthesia and EMS programs as directed.</li><li>Communicating with and functioning effectively with all co-workers to deliver quality care.</li><li>The CRNA supports research by conducting and/or participating when able. Performing anesthesia practice that is research/evidenced based.</li><li>Performs other duties as assigned.</li></ul> Qualifications:<ul><li>Graduation from a nurse anesthesia program fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and recognized by the boards of nursing and medicine required. Masters or Doctorate degree preferred.</li><li>Current Virginia licensure as a Registered Nurse required.</li><li>Current Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in Anesthesia required.</li><li>Current NBCRNA certification as a Nurse Anesthetist required.</li><li>Current BLS and ACLS certification required.</li><li>Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by the state of Virginia required.</li><li>Successful completion of the credentialing or re-credentialing process through the office of Medical Staff Services required.</li></ul>As an EOE/AA employer, the organization will not discriminate in its employment practices due to an applicant's race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and veteran or disability status.
