Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position: A hand therapist with an occupational therapist license or a physical therapist license who specializes in treating individuals with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremity. A qualified hand therapist can evaluate and treat any problem related to the upper extremity.
Essential Job Functions:
Patient Assessment: Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with hand and upper extremity conditions to determine their needs, limitations, and goals.
Treatment Planning: Develop customized treatment plans based on individual patient assessments, medical history, and the nature of the injury or condition.
Orthotic Fabrication: Design and create custom orthotic devices, such as splints or braces, to support and protect injured or surgically repaired hands and arms.
Therapeutic Interventions: Administer a wide range of therapeutic techniques, including manual therapy, exercises, and modalities like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and heat/cold therapy.
Scar Management: Address scar tissue issues through manual techniques, scar massage, and other therapeutic interventions to improve scar mobility and appearance.
Wound Care: Provide wound care for patients with hand injuries or post-operative wounds to promote healing and prevent infection.
Pain Management: Develop pain management strategies, which may include modalities and techniques to alleviate pain and discomfort.
Range of Motion Restoration: Work to restore and improve joint mobility, muscle strength, and range of motion in the hand and upper extremity.
Functional Training: Implement exercises and activities that focus on restoring functional hand and arm abilities, such as grasping, gripping, and fine motor skills.
Edema Control: Employ techniques to manage and reduce swelling (edema) in the hand and upper extremity.
Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment plans, and home exercise programs to promote recovery and prevent.
Licensing/Certification
Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy License
Certified Hand therapist (CHT)--preferred
