Job Title: Respiratory Care Practitioner II Department/Subsidiary: Respiratory Care

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the administration of routine respiratory care to all pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Primary functions include the administration of oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, bipap/cpap, pulse oximetry, capnography, apnea link, ekg, spirometry, 6 minute walk, O2 determination, ABG, heart admissions, rapid response, code blue, transfers, Areas worked include: general acute care areas, intensive care, emergency department, surgical suites, recovery rooms, skilled nursing facilities, and other clinical areas.

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY
A. Reports to: Clinical Supervisor, Respiratory Care Services.
B. Supervises: N/A
C. Key Working Relationships: Physicians, and Cardiac Pulmonary Multi-Disciplinary Team.
D. Primary Customer Groups: Patients, physicians, and all health disciplines.
E. Age/Population of Patients Served:

Neonatal Adolescent Geriatric
Pediatric Adult X All Ages

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Performs incentive spirometry, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, pulmonary drainage procedures, BIPAP/CPAP, ventilator management, therapeutic bronchoscopy, co-oximetry, ekg, holter, zio, intubation assist, extubation, blood gas, outpatient testing, and suctioning following interpretation of physician order.
B. Assesses patients receiving Respiratory Care using beside assessment technique and knowledge of indications, contraindications, hazards of the above procedures and actions/reactions of medications being given.
C. Responds to and are team members of the resuscitation and rapid response pages.
D. Performs aseptic techniques when required, and routine cleaning and disinfecting procedures.
E. Performs basic spirometry procedures, electrocardiograms, arterial blood gas sampling and analysis.
F. Provides patient education and assists with community events dealing with Respiratory Care.
G. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
H. Communicates with and performs duties following Mercy One North Iowa Service Excellence Standards of Behavior.
I. Supports and abides by all health center departmental and safety policies and procedures.
J. Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy and values of Mercy One North Iowa.
K. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Clinical Leaders or Manager of Respiratory Care.
L. Creates and documents individual plan for professional/personal growth.
M. Performs department tasks related to maintenance of medications, equipment, and documentation.
N. Participates in the Mercy Way by attending huddle and using problem solving and waste elimination tools to promote continuous positive improvement.
O. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.
P. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
Q. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development. Participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.
R. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors.
S. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
T. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; or associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science required.
2. Graduate of respiratory therapy program required or board-eligible within a few months of graduation as certification is required at hire/transfer.
3. Credentialed by the NBRC at the Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist level required.
4. Current Respiratory Care Practitioner licensure in the state of Iowa required.
5. CAPRS and N95 fit testing validation within 30 days of hire required.
B. Experience:
1. Must have demonstrated competence in Respiratory Care.
C. Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes:
1. Must be able to communicate well with the patients and hospital personnel.
2. Proactively works with patient to promote healing and exceptional care.
3. Must be able to read, write and/or speak English

X Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Provider-American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer-American Red Cross) prior to employment or within 30 days of hire and maintains current status.
X Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines
X Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association and maintain current status.
Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
