Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to have an “unencumbered” RN license?

An RN license that is not currently limited in practice in any way or subjected to formal discipline from any state board of nursing.

Can I renew my AOCN by taking the exam?

The only option available for AOCN renewal is by completing the practice hours and Professional Development Points. The AOCN certification does not require the nurse to take the Individual Learning Needs Assessment (ILNA) before completing the CE hours for renewal.

What types of CE activities count toward the 50 CE hours for AOCN renewal?

The nurse may complete nursing CE hours, medical education hours, academic courses, or utilize publications and presentations for the Professional Development Points. All must be related to adult oncology practice.

What are some certifications I can pursue after obtaining AOCN certification?

You can pursue Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN) or Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN), among others.

What organization offers the AOCN?

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) offers the AOCN for renewal only.
