About

Nurses who specialize in the care of pediatric clients and their families work in acute care facilities, outpatient clinics, home health, and remote triage roles. For pediatric nurses that utilize the nursing process in the care of clients with cancer, the Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (CPON) certification is a validation of the knowledge and skills required for the care of clients from birth to adolescence.

The Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (CPON) certification is offered for renewal only as of March 2022, by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC).

The CPON certification is valid for four years. 

To renew the certification, the nurse must fulfill the following items:

  • Current CPON certification.

  • Current, unencumbered RN licensure in the US, its territories, or Canada at the time of application.

  • A minimum of one year of RN experience within the three years prior to application.

  • A minimum of 1,000 hours of pediatric oncology nursing practice within the two-and-one-half years (30 months) prior to application.

  • Completion of 50 Professional Development Points in pediatric oncology.

The cost to renew the CPON certification is dependent on application deadlines and professional organization membership. Early registration before September 15th and ONS membership decrease the renewal fees.

Renewal Fees:

Practice hours + Professional Development (Points)

  • Applying before September 15, 2023 - $240 for ONS/APHON members and $360 for non-members

  • Applying by October 15, 2023 (Final Deadline) - $340 for ONS/APHON members and $460 for non-members
