The Certification in Acute/Critical Care Pediatric Nursing (CCRN Pediatric) validates the knowledge and skills of registered nurses providing care to acutely ill pediatric patients. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) offers the CCRN (Pediatric) exam, accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC).

Eligibility

To be eligible to take the CCRN (Pediatric) exam, applicants must have:

  • An active RN or APRN license in any U.S. state

  • Met one of the following clinical hour requirements:

    • Completed 1,750 hours as an RN or APRN in the direct care of acute or critically ill pediatric patients in the last 2 years (with 875 hours completed in the year preceding application)

    • Worked as an RN or APRN for at least 5 years with at least 2,000 hours in the direct care of acute or critically ill pediatric patients (with 144 hours completed in the year preceding application)

Clinical hours must be verifiable by a supervisor or colleague (RN or physician).

Course Format

Exam Format

The CCRN (Pediatric) exam includes 150 scored questions and 25 unscored questions. It takes 3 hours to complete and examinees must correctly answer a minimum of 82 questions to pass. Exam topics include:

Test Dates

Applicants can register to take the in-person exam anytime based on availability at their selected PSI Testing Center. Examinees may also take the exam at home via PSI’s Live Remote Proctoring (LRP) service.

In Person

Applicants register for the exam after receiving a confirmation email from AACN.

  • Go to the AACN Dashboard

  • Log in to AACN Account

  • Click “Schedule Exam”

  • Select an in-person exam at a PSI Testing Center

  • Select exam date

Exam Day Instructions

  • Arrive at the testing center 30 minutes before exam time

  • Bring a government-issued ID 

  • Store personal items in provided lockers

    • Food and drinks aren’t allowed in the testing room

  • Take the software tutorial before the exam

  • Test results appear on the screen after test completion

    • AACN mails a detailed score report within 24 hours

For remote proctored exams, applicants must use a computer with a camera, microphone, and internet connection. Review details for minimum operating system requirements and perform a compatibility check.

Exam Day Instructions

When scheduling the exam, applicants will be given information for logging into the PSI online system on testing day.

  • Log in to the PSI testing platform up to 15 minutes before the appointment time

  • Complete the check-in process performed by the PSI test administrator, including a webcam, microphone, and environment check

    • Examinees must be alone, in a quiet, well-lit space, with the computer on a table or desk

    • No food, drinks, headphones, electronics, or notes are permitted

  • Complete an identification check performed by the PSI test administrator

    • The live proctor remains present throughout the test for questions

Test results appear on the screen after test completion. AACN mails a detailed score report within 24 hours.

Renewal

CCRN (Pediatric) is valid for 3 years. To be eligible for renewal, applicants must:

  • Have an active RN license in any U.S. state 

  • Hold a current, active CCRN (Pediatric) certification from the AACN

  • Have completed a minimum of 12 hours per month (or 432 hours over 3 years) as an RN or APRN in the direct care of acute or critically ill pediatric patients

    • With 144 hours completed in the year preceding renewal

  • Complete 100 CERPs

  • Pay renewal fee

Renewal applicants can renew by retaking the exam or completing continuing education requirements, called Synergy Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs). Renewal applicants can submit an online renewal application up to 4 months before expiration.

Continuing Education

Part of the renewal process requires 100 Synergy Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs). Renewal applicants must complete a minimum of 60 CERPs in category A, and 10 CERPs in both categories B and C. The remaining 20 CERPs can be in a category of the applicants choosing.

What if I let my CCRN (Pediatric) certification expire?

If expired, CCRN (Pediatric) certificate holders must undergo a review process by an Internal Review Panel (IRP) and include a written explanation of their current eligibility and documents to support reinstatement. The IRP makes a decision within 30 days.

What if I don’t pass the CCRN (Pediatric)?

You may retest up to 4 times within 1 year. Candidates who took the exam within their most recent eligibility period but didn’t pass may qualify for a discounted retest fee.
