Registered nurses are in high demand in Dallas. According to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, it’s projected that the state will see a shortage of more than 50,000 registered nurses by 2032. As recently as August 2021, the Texas Tribune reported that the city was already facing a shortage of 23,000 nurses.

Among travel nursing positions in Dallas during the same period, high-demand roles included the same positions as staff nurses. However, nurses specializing in cardiovascular OR, oncology, NICU and intermediate care also topped the list.

Projected Demand for RNs in Texas

While Texas expects to see an increased shortage of nurses in the near future, there’s already a dire need for more nurses in Dallas and throughout the state. Based on a 2018 Texas Health and Human Services report, Texas had more than 223,581 full-time registered nurses working across the state. While a nurse practitioner earns an average of $18.49 per hour more than a registered nurse in Dallas, this is an advanced practice role and to be expected. The average hourly wage of allied health professionals also tends to be lower than RNs.
