Miami-Dade County is known for its beaches, but it’s also one of the best places in Florida to seek medical careers, as it has 30 hospitals providing everything from preventive services to cancer treatment. Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC) in Miami Beach is one of those hospitals. Located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the nation, the 672-bed facility has plenty to offer healthcare professionals at every stage of their careers. Read on to learn why you should add MSMC to your list of potential employers in Miami.

Background Information on Mount Sinai Medical Center

In 1949, a group of local residents wanted to make medical care available to everyone regardless of race, color, creed or financial circumstances. They established MSMC with the goal of creating a hospital where patients could get the care they needed and physicians could practice in an environment free of discrimination.

Today, the facility is the largest private, not-for-profit teaching hospital in the Sunshine State. Its physicians and staff members continue to provide care without regard for each patient’s race, color, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. MSMC is also a critical resource for the community, as it provides charity care to uninsured and underinsured patients.

The facility has 4,300 employees, including 760-plus physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs), 177 allied health and undergraduate students, and 204 residents and fellows. According to the hospital’s Community Benefit Report, Mount Sinai Medical Center had 152,730 outpatient admissions and 25,086 inpatient admissions in 2021.

Mission Statement

Mount Sinai Medical Center aims to provide high-quality care through the pillars of teaching, charity care, research and financial responsibility. The facility is currently a statutory teaching hospital, a label applied to any hospital with at least 100 full-time residents in seven or more graduate medical education programs accredited by the Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association or the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. MSMC also serves as a clinical site for nursing students from several schools in Miami, Florida.

The research pillar of its mission statement focuses on developing effective treatment options with as few side effects as possible. Physicians, APPs, registered nurses (RNs) and other personnel even conduct clinical trials, giving participants access to the most advanced care available. MSMC is known for its research in cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, urology, anesthesiology and cardiovascular diseases.

As previously noted, Mount Sinai Medical Center regularly provides charity care to patients with limited financial resources. Per its Community Benefit Report, the hospital provided more than $219 million in uncompensated care in 2021. MSMC also tremendously impacts the local community, paying nearly $400 million annually in employee salaries and benefits. As part of its commitment to teaching and charity care, MSMC provides free screenings in Miami and other parts of Miami-Dade County, holds free educational lectures on health topics and offers community CPR training.

In 2022, U.S. News & World Report recognized MSMC as high-performing in heart attack, heart failure and aortic valve surgery. The hospital scored 5 out of 5 in the heart attack category for its cardiac ICU and high 30-day survival rate. For heart failure, the hospital received top marks for using noninvasive breathing aid. MSMC did well in the aortic valve surgery category due to the volume of inpatients aged 65 and older served over a 5-year period.

Gastroenterology

MSMC is known for its comprehensive gastroenterology program, which emphasizes individualized GI care for patients of all ages. The facility is one of few Miami hospitals to offer a wide range of motility tests, aiding in the early detection of nerve and muscle problems that make it more difficult for food and beverages to move through the digestive tract. Patients can also access advanced endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic mucosal resection, luminal stenting, radiofrequency ablation and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.

Geriatrics

In 2022, U.S. News & World Report recognized Mount Sinai Medical Center as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for geriatrics, awarding it a score of 74.4 out of 100.
