Job Summary The inpatient Float Pool is comprised of highly-skilled Registered Nurses (RN) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) with the ability to provide high quality care to our patients and families in a variety of clinical areas. The Float RNs are trained to supplement the staffing needs of both William P. Clements and Zale Lipshy University Hospitals. The float pool RNs offer a broad understanding of inpatient workflows and have a vast knowledge and expansive skill sets which allow them to be resources to all inpatient areas. Highly-skilled and specialized care is essential to the UT Southwestern mission of quality in patient care, education, and research. Our mission, as a float pool, is to partner with inpatient units to create supportive staffing solutions to meet the demands of our University Hospitals and patients' needs, while providing continuity of care in a safe environment. Our vision is to provide flexible and supportive staffing solutions in alignment with the UT Southwestern mission. Experience and Education Minimum of 3 years RN experience which must include 2 years ICU experience Graduate of accredited nursing program Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license ACLS & BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required as well as NIHSS Float Pool Level 5 RN will float to both critical care and non-critical care areas as needed. BSN & CCRN preferred Job Duties Performs and documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Takes assessments into consideration age specific criteria. Anticipates patient's and/or patient's family's needs and expectations and utilizes them in conjunction with assessment to develop appropriate plan of care for patient. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation. Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment. Completes documentation of these interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care. Confers with all members of health care team in collaborative fashion, sharing information and observations of patient and/or family in manner that contributes to optimal patient care. Prioritizes nursing interventions based upon assessment. Identifies changes in condition as evidenced by nursing assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Reports changes and takes follow-up action. Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care. Adheres to appropriate hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice while delivering nursing care to patients. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current literature and research. Provides answers and/or education to patients and/or patient's families. Completes documentation of all education provided. Obtains feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and family. Demonstrates effective communication with children, adolescents, adults and older adults. Welcomes and orients patient and family to unit. Encourages patient and family participation in care. Reviews plan of care with patient and family. Explains special diets, tests, procedures, and medications. Makes frequent rounds on patients and communicates when will return. Assumes accountability for all actions in workplace. Reports errors and takes follow-up action to rectify error. Provides supervision of and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to environment. Delegates duties within legal parameters. Responds to patient's and/or patient's family's complaints to Clinical Nurse Manager or their designee. Utilizes chain of command to resolve issues. Participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions. **Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
