Registered Nurse - Juvenile (Part-Time)


Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill a 50% RN position for 20 hours with pro-rated benefits. This position performs professional nursing work within the Spokane Juvenile Corrections. The position allocated to this class, under the supervision of the designated physician and the Juvenile Court Services Director, or designee, is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising and administering the medical care program at the Juvenile Detention Center. NOTES: * HOURS WORKED ARE TYPICALLY SET HOURS, BUT MAY INCLUDE EVENINGS, WEEKENDS, AND DAYS. * SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR RN LICENSE WITH YOUR APPLICATION. APPLICATIONS NOT CONTAINING LICENSE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Examples of Duties * Holds sick call and examines patients to determine their need for medical care. * Assists the Licensed Medical Provider with physical examinations involving techniques such as: setting and casting fractures, suturing, and minor surgery, removal of warts, lancing of boils, or the removal of damaged fingernails and toenails. * Prepares, carries out, evaluates and revises treatment plans for individual patients based on personal observations and recommendations of the Licensed Medical Provider. * Treats minor ailments, under the direction of the Licensed Medical Provider, such as headaches, stomachaches, colds, influenza, cuts and scratches; performs eye and ear irrigations; applies surgical dressings and bandages; and gives first aid. * Records and administers or oversees the administration of medications such as tranquilizers, anti-seizure medications, immunizations, vitamins, antibiotics in several ways such as; topically, orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously and intravenously as directed by a Licensed Medical Provider; and ensures that patient and medication records are properly posted and maintained. * Observes and records the physical and mental condition of patients noting physical and/or behavioral changes and the effects of drugs. * Takes and records blood pressure, pulse rate and body temperature of patients; and evaluates physical and mental conditions of patients to determine whether they require the attention of a Licensed Medical Provider. * Takes samples of blood, urine, sputum, feces, gastric contents, gynecological cultures for laboratory tests; instructs patients on giving sputum, urine, and other specimens; and prepares slides. * Cares for and counsels ill, injured or infirm patients; provides for the safety, comfort and protection of patients; responds to patients' needs, encourages healthy mental attitudes and new behavior patterns. * Sterilizes medical supplies, establishes security measures to prevent loss or theft of drugs and supplies; requisitions supplies; and delivers and distributes supplies. * Trains Juvenile Correction Officers on medical protocols. * Performs other related duties as required/assigned. Minimum Requirements * Degree from an accredited school of professional nursing. * One (1) year of professional nursing experience. * Possession of a First Aid/CPR/AED Certification. * Possession of a current and valid Washington State License to practice as a registered nurse. * NOTE: Requires successful completion of security check. Selection Factors * Knowledge of professional nursing principles and concepts. * Knowledge of dynamics of interpersonal relationships. * Knowledge of mental growth and development. * Knowledge of psychiatric nursing techniques and theories and techniques involved in nursing the mentally ill. * Knowledge of mental health concepts and available community resources. * Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction. * Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with nursing staff, physicians, departments, supervisors and inmate population. * Ability to use nursing judgement and knowledge. * Ability to work effectively with others or independently, and assume responsibility for professional growth and development.

Pay

Average Washington Staff Position Pay

$38.50/hour
