UPMC Shadyside, a 3x Magnet-designated hospital, is currently hiring Full-time Registered Nurses to join our Medical Oncology Unit 6 Main and our Medical ICU. This transitional program is a fast track to the ICU and is designed to equip you with the skills that you need to become a successful ICU nurse. You will begin your nursing career on 6 Main, and then transition to our MICU. In this time, it is our goal to help build the foundation, knowledge, and skill sets required when caring for the diverse and high-acuity patient population. About the Units: 6 Main - Medical Oncology: 6 Main is a Hematology/Oncology unit specializing in a wide range of oncological diagnoses and is at the forefront of research. This unit primarily serves our lymphoma patients receiving chemotherapy and biological treatments. 6 Main is UPMC Shadyside Hospital's Dedicated Education unit where clinical staff nurses serve as instructors for the University of Pittsburgh nursing students. These clinical staff nurses receive special training and opportunities to pursue further education at the university. MICU - Medical ICU: The Medical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is a 20-bed critical care facility, the largest of Shadyside's ICUs. We primarily care for critically ill oncology medical, cardiac, and post-stem cell transplant patients, however, due to our size, we frequently receive overflow from many other areas of the hospital. You can expect to see procedures such as tracheostomies and bronchoscopies right at the bedside, as well as the use of ventilators, vasopressors, and CRRT machines. We are very team-oriented here, which is important as the MICU can feel hectic at times; the MICU is an extremely rewarding environment for nurses who enjoy thinking on their feet to meet challenges and solve problems. Transitioning to the ICU is contingent on upon the employee's performance during the first year of hire. The minimum rate of pay for a non-BSN Professional Staff Nurse is $31.60. Serves as a highly engaged and full partner on the care team and responds willingly to care, and team member needs for assistance and partnership. Adapts to change and demonstrates flexibility with the change process. * Actively participates in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care identifies research issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest, discusses opportunities for quality improvement at multidisciplinary rounds, and influences patients' plans of care. * No RN experience is required. BSN is strongly preferred. * Completion of UPMC Student Nurse Internship Program or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred * The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. * They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures. * Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. * Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, and handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. * Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: * Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse required prior to the program start date * CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. * Act 34 Criminal Clearance. * Basic Life Support.
