I had the pleasure of working at St. Johns this year. Raul, the day shift lead is great and tries his best to make sure that the doctors and nurses have what they need for the procedures. The manager, while nice, doesn’t seem to know the ends and outs of the department as well as he should and relays on the leader’s help in just about everything. This can be a bit frustrating for the technicians because the manager is supposed to be the head of the ship. If they cannot trust the manager to execute a simple issue without the help of the lead, the whole department is pretty much left fragile. The department overall is in great need of upgrades, ESPECIALLY the decontamination area. The washers break down every single second of the day. The sinks aren’t big enough to fully submerge the instruments. There aren’t any spray guns for lumens. It’s tough because the technicians really work hard, but the equipment is in dire need of replacement & it makes it very difficult to make sure instruments are clean. Almost every time, there’s an instrument has to be sent back because it hasn’t been decontaminated properly. That’s not all the fault of the technician, but mostly with the equipment that is available to do the job. That was one of a few reasons why I decided not to stay.
