Registered Nurse (Surgical Acute) - Illinois, Peoria
Job Details
- Specialty: Surgical Acute
- Location: Peoria, Illinois
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights (1930-0730)
- Hours per Day: 12
- Hours per Week: 36
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Scheduling: Block scheduling considered with prior approval; travelers do not self-schedule
- Floating: Travelers float first, only to units matching their experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed; scrubs not provided
- Orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC, professional orientation, and unit educator
Unit Information
- Department: Surgical Acute
- Beds: 63 total (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day: 4-5 patients per RN
- Night: 5-6 patients per RN
- Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs (PCT):
- Day: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Night: 10-15 patients per PCT
- Duties: Vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, ambulation
- Charge Nurse & House Supervisor:
- Charge Nurses: 2 per shift, do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Telemetry:
- Some patients on telemetry monitored by techs at central station
- RNs do not read telemetry strips
- Equipment: Phillips monitors
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- No ventilators on unit
- CPAP and high flow oxygen used; RT manages nebulizers, RNs manage inhalers and place patients on CPAP
Patient Population & Care
- Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:
- Post-op surgical
- Trauma
- Overflow medical
- Common Nursing Tasks:
- Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Post-op care experience required
- Critical thinking and good bedside manner essential
- Team player attitude expected
- RNs do not titrate drips except for Heparin (only titratable drip)
- Charge nurses do not take patient assignments
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Med Surg (1 year of experience)
- Med Surg experience within the last year
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus)
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Call off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
- Orientation hours: 12 non-billable hours during orientation period
