Surgical Acute RN

Overview

• Role: RN
• Specialty/Unit: Surgical Acute
• Setting: RN unit with 63 beds

Schedule

• Shift: Nights
• Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
• Shift times: 1930-0730
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: Rotate every other holiday
• Scheduling: Travelers do not self-schedule; block scheduling may be considered if approved at contract time

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Required Qualifications

• BLS
• Active IL license or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
• Post-op care of patients
• Critical thinking skills
• Ability to ask for help when needed
• Good bedside manner
• Team player

Unit Details

• Common patient types include post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical, dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5:1 on days and 5-6:1 on nights; may increase to 6:1 on days and 7:1 on nights if needed
• Charge nurses do not take an assignment
• PCT support is available
• No vents on the unit; CPAP and high flow are used
• Some patients are on telemetry; bedside RNs do not read strips
• Floating is required; travelers are first to float and may float to units with the same level of experience
• Scrub color is any color

Additional Notes

• Local placements within 50 miles are accepted
• Local clinicians receive an adjusted rate
• There is a drug screen requirement for submission
• Non-billable orientation is 12 hours, and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
• Unit orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with the unit educator
