Overview

• 13-week contract in Weirton, West Virginia.
• Night shift, 12 hours per day, 36 hours per week.
• Busy 16-bed unit with 10 hall beds.
• Level 4 trauma center and STEMI receiving.
• Not a designated stroke center; has a telestroke partnership.
• Paper charting.

Required Qualifications

• RN license.
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS.
• At least 2 years of ED experience.
• Must be comfortable titrating all critical drips.

Preferred Qualifications

• TNCC.
• NIHSS.
• Prior trauma experience.

Schedule

• Shifts may include 11a-11p, 3p-3a, and 7p-7a.
• Every other weekend.
• May be asked to participate in holiday rotation.
• Modified self-scheduling is used.

Unit Details

• About 41,000 patients annually.
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4; can be 1:5 with hall beds and up to 1:8 on occasion.
• No ancillary help.
• No monitor techs; RNs read their own strips.
• RT is in the building 24/7.
• ED staff does not float to other units.

Common Patient Types

• Chest pain
• Abdominal pain
• Shortness of breath
• Falls
• Stroke-like symptoms
• Altered mental status
• Back pain

Additional Notes

• 3 ED physicians are staffed around the clock.
• 3 ED techs are staffed around the clock and are paramedics.
• RNs draw all labs except type and cross/screen.
• Navy blue scrubs.
