PACU Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Summary

The Phase I Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to pediatric and adult patients during the immediate post-anesthesia period. The RN utilizes advanced assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills to promote physiologic stability, manage post-operative complications, and ensure a safe transition to the next level of care.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide care for patients undergoing various surgical procedures, including ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ENT), and head and neck surgeries.
  • Assess and monitor patients for physiologic stability and identify potential complications.
  • Administer medications and perform treatments as prescribed by the physician.
  • Educate patients and their families on post-operative care and recovery expectations.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care transitions.
  • Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in accordance with established protocols.

Qualifications

  • Current nursing license and regulatory body verification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Clinical Environment

The Phase I PACU serves a diverse patient population, addressing a wide range of surgical complexities from routine outpatient procedures to specialized surgeries, including pediatric otolaryngology, complex airway procedures, microvascular reconstruction, and head and neck oncologic surgeries.

Patients are transitioned safely to Phase II recovery, an inpatient unit, or an intensive care setting based on their clinical needs.
