Job Description

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for delivering care to surgical patients and ensuring the efficient operation of the Surgery Department. This role involves providing instruction on the technical aspects of surgery to medical students, nurses, and other technicians, as well as occasionally communicating with patients and their families. The Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of surgical equipment, serving as the first line of defense against infection and equipment malfunction.

Essential Job Duties

• Prepare instrument sets and necessary equipment based on the proposed surgery, potential complications, and surgeon preferences.
• Scrub, gown, and glove oneself and team members for surgical procedures.
• Drape patients and assist surgeons in accordance with approved methods.
• Handle surgical instruments properly and ensure their function.
• Maintain sterile technique and promptly address any breaches.
• Count sponges and sharp instruments with the Circulating Nurse before and after procedures.
• Anticipate the surgeon's needs to minimize delays during surgery.
• Assist with the clean-up of the operating room before and after procedures.
• Act as first assistant to the surgeon when required, including tasks like retracting tissue and cutting sutures.
• Identify and preserve specimens received during surgery.
• Keep the OR Supervisor updated on changes in the operating room and equipment.
• Inform staff of any schedule changes for surgeries.
• Participate in training and education of personnel within the department.
• Restock supplies in accordance with inventory levels.
• Report equipment maintenance needs to the department supervisor.
• Familiarize oneself with transportation protocols for preoperative patients.
• Commit to ongoing education in surgical technology through various means.
• Be flexible with scheduling, including working different shifts, taking call, and weekends as necessary.
• Attend departmental meetings to enhance communication regarding policies and procedures.
• Respect patient confidentiality and privacy rights.
• Follow chain of command for reporting relevant information.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Sterile Processing Technician Duties

• Understand all functions and uses of surgical equipment to facilitate smooth surgical procedures.
• Adhere strictly to sterilization guidelines to ensure medical equipment is decontaminated as necessary.
• Check surgical equipment for defects and ensure proper functioning.
• Clean and sterilize tools according to established protocols.
• Organize and maintain inventory levels in sterile storage areas.
• Stock and inventory crash carts as needed.
• Distribute instruments to appropriate departments.
• Operate sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and sonic washers.
• Record sterilizer test results accurately.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

• Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist training program or a minimum of one year of experience in OR scrub nursing (may be waived at the discretion of the OR Supervisor).
• Current BLS certification.
• Certification as a Central Supply Technician is preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of various surgical procedures and the ability to anticipate surgeon needs.
• Proficient in proper instrument and supply handling techniques.
• Thorough understanding of medical asepsis in the operating room context.
• Ability to handle tissue specimens and cultures appropriately.
• Skills in memorizing surgical instruments and managing inventory efficiently.
• Willingness to work with exposure to blood and body tissues.
• Completion of required training in cleaning procedures and safety protocols.

Shift Information

Shift hours are Monday to Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with variability based on case load. Flexibility for additional hours, including weekends, may be required as needed.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of two years of experience is required for this position.
