Job Overview
This position involves providing comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in a general medical-surgical setting. The nurse will be responsible for managing a variety of patient diagnoses and administering treatments as outlined in patient care plans.
Requirements
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience is required.
- First-time travelers are accepted.
- Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) is preferred.
- Charge nurse experience is preferred for night shift travelers.
Job Details
- Shift: 12 hours from 0645 to 1915.
- Contracts of 36 and 48 hours accepted.
- Longer contracts of 13 to 26 weeks are also accepted.
- On-call duties as required.
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations is required.
- Every other weekend work is mandatory.
- Holidays must be worked as scheduled.
- Patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:6.
Additional Responsibilities
Contract staff will be assigned to participate in a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report to work during catastrophic events or disasters. There may be a consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract, and contract staff may be reassigned as needed.
Meetings
All staff are expected to attend unit team meetings, which occur on the 4th Wednesday of each month from January through October at 1730. In November and December, meetings will be held on the 3rd Wednesday at the same time. Additional meetings for night shift staff will take place at 0730 on the Friday immediately following the Wednesday meetings.
Patient Population
The unit sees a daily census of approximately 43 patients, providing care for general medical-surgical cases primarily involving adults and the elderly.
Special Procedures
- Administration of Heparin drips.
- Wound Vac dressing changes.
- High-flow oxygen therapy.
- Short-term BiPap respiratory support may be available without additional training.
Unit Systems
The unit utilizes PYXIS for medication management, EPIC for documentation, and employs the SBAR communication method.
Orientation
New hires will undergo a 24-hour orientation to become familiar with unit protocols and procedures.
Scrub Color
Scrubs must be navy.
Miscellaneous
All travelers and staff must pass EKG testing prior to starting in this specialty.
