Description

Cardiac Sonographer

Position Summary

The Cardiac Sonographer operates medical imaging equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves toward anatomical structures for diagnostic purposes. The primary responsibility includes consistently obtaining high-quality imaging for cardiovascular assessment and interpretation by a Cardiologist. This role also involves documenting patient care in electronic medical records and requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. Compassionate patient interaction and adherence to the organization's values and mission are essential.

Position Specific Competencies

Equipment

  • Effectively operates echocardiography machines, including knowledge of various imaging techniques and display settings.
  • Proficient in the use of color Doppler, power Doppler, spectral Doppler, and M-mode.
  • Capable of performing portable exams and transmitting images to the Synapse system.
  • Conducts all types of echocardiography exams including Echocardiograms, Limited Echocardiograms, Stress Echocardiograms, and Transesophageal Echocardiograms.
  • Evaluates images for quality and ensures optimal demonstration of anatomical regions and pathologies.
  • Handles the charging of exams within the EPIC system.
  • Maintains information regarding ultrasound equipment, including disinfection protocols and testing records.

Echocardiography Workflow

  • Manages scheduling and ensures appropriate use criteria for diagnostic exams and completion of referrals.
  • Modifies and cancels exam orders, and maintains reconciliation of daily reports.
  • Greets and confirms patient identity, educates on the procedure, and collects necessary clinical information.
  • Possesses knowledge of Peripheral IV placements for certain exams, adhering to certification requirements.
  • Utilizes the Synapse system to draft preliminary reports for Cardiologist review and interpretation.

PACS & Synapse

  • Demonstrates proficiency in using the Synapse and PACS systems.
  • Capable of sending study images from the echocardiography machine to PACS and external facilities for continued patient care.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in cardiac sonography.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must possess one of the following certifications:
    • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography
    • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International
    • Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS) from the Canadian Association of Registered Diagnostic Ultrasound Professionals

Shift Information

This position is primarily a day shift role with no holiday coverage required.
