Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is accountable for the overall nursing practice within the assigned unit during their shift. In the absence of the Unit Manager, the RN will report to the Nursing Supervisor, Charge Nurse, or Nursing House Supervisor during the shift.

Essential Functions

• Collects Patient Health Data:
  • Prioritizes data collection based on the patient's immediate condition or needs.
  • Utilizes appropriate assessment techniques based on the patient's and family’s developmental levels, health status, and identified learning needs.
  • Involves the patient, significant others, and other health care providers when appropriate in data collection.
  • Documents relevant data in a retrievable form.
• Analyzes Assessment Data:
  • Validates findings with the patient and other health care providers.
  • Documents observations in a manner that supports the plan of care.
• Identifies Expected Outcomes:
  • Outcomes should be measurable, realistic, and attainable within the established timeframe.
  • Collaboratively formulated with the patient and health care providers whenever possible.
• Develops a Plan of Care:
  • Individualized to meet the patient's needs and reflect current nursing practices.
  • Includes interventions to address patient and family learning needs.
  • Documented and ensures continuity of care post-discharge.
• Implements Interventions:
  • Consistent with the established plan of care and executed to prevent potential health problems.
  • Ensures a safe and appropriate approach to nursing measures.
  • Documented as part of ongoing care management.
• Evaluates Patient Progress:
  • Uses a systematic process to evaluate patient responses to interventions.
  • Adjusts care plans as needed based on ongoing assessments.
  • Collaborates with patients and health care providers in the evaluation process.
• Implements Quality Improvement:
  • Participates in quality care activities and recommends improvements.
  • Engages in interdisciplinary teams to evaluate clinical practice.
  • Utilizes results of quality activities to enhance nursing practice.
• Maintains Professional Standards:
  • Engages in regular performance appraisals and seeks feedback.
  • Participates in peer review and professional development opportunities.
  • Maintains current knowledge through continued education and training.
• Demonstrates Ethical Practice:
  • Follows the Code for Nurses and respects patient confidentiality.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and delivers care sensitively.
• Collaborates with Healthcare Providers:
  • Communicates effectively with patients, significant others, and health care providers regarding patient care.
  • Makes referrals as necessary and ensures continuity of care.
• Utilizes Research in Practice:
  • Incorporates evidence-based interventions into practice.
  • Participates in research activities relevant to nursing.

  • Evaluates safety, effectiveness, and cost factors in patient care options.
