Work Location: University of Miami Hospital & Clinics - Lennar - Perioperative Services, Full-Time

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Certified Nursing Assistant 2 performs intermediate patient care activities under the supervision of a registered nurse. More specifically, the incumbent assists patients in dressing and undressing, bathing, eating, collects noninvasive body fluid specimens, gathers vital signs, and assembles, monitors and discontinues intravenous feeding tubes. Additionally, the incumbent works closely with patients on activities of daily living such as transferring from the bed to a chair and performing minor physical therapy routines.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides for patients’ personal hygiene by giving bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves, and assisting with showers.
Assists with meals and feeds patients, ambulates, turns, and positions patients, and provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.
Administers enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, therapeutic and sitz baths, and applies restraints.
Performs sugar and acetone urine testing, specimen collection, and post-mortem care.
Answers patients’ call lights and requests promptly.
Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and staff and transports patients and equipment.
Reports patient conditions to the assigned nurse to ensure professional assessment.
Measures and records food and liquid intake and output, and checks and records vital signs.
Provides patient help with walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
Performs minor physical therapy routines.
Collects urine samples, attaches EKG leads and removes catheters.
Assembles, monitors, and discontinues feeding of intravenous nutrition.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Certified Nursing Assistant license

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

CNA Duties

Observes and reports patient’s status and needs.
Obtains weights and vital signs, reporting results to nursing team.
Obtains specimens from nursing staff for transport to lab or designated department.
Operates all equipment in a safe manner.
Alerts appropriate RN team members as emergencies arise, or when changes in patient status are noted.
Gathers equipment that will be needed to control emergency patient care situations.
Demonstrates age specific competencies.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Retrieves patient from waiting room and directs them to appropriate bay in pre-procedure area.
Assists with patient transport to and from procedure room as needed.
Transports patient to their vehicle after procedures.
Provides patient and family centered care, by assisting families of patients, providing updates as needed
At the direction of physician and pre-procedure nursing team, provides pre-procedure surgical skin preparation including hair clipping if needed.
Cleans bay’s, stretchers, and patient care area equipment as needed between patients.
Assists with OR Room turnover in coordination with environmental services and OR Team members, working toward operational efficiencies and meeting room turnover time goals.
Obtains equipment needed for procedures at direction of OR team.
Assists OR team with patient positioning and surgical preparation as needed at the direction of surgical nursing team.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of all required equipment, instrumentation and supplies being used during routine procedures performed in the procedural area.
Clerical Duties

Responsible for clinical and clerical functions of the respective unit.
Performs secretarial duties for the unit including but not limited to faxing, copying, mailing, and typing any essential material.
Answers telephone promptly and courteously using proper telephone etiquette and routes calls and messages appropriately.
Ability to work both in the clinical and clerical setting
Implements appropriate preventative measure for patients identified with safety risks (i.e. falls).
Schedules follow-up appointments and consults ensuring patient has appropriate information and provide as needed.
Assists with scheduling as needed for labs, diagnostic procedures, OR, and radiation treatment (i.e. CT, MRI, Bone Scan, etc.) as ordered by physician.
Retrieves and/or assists clinical personnel in retrieving diagnostic studies as needed.
Retrieves and prints schedules for the next day.
Orders supplies for stock room as needed
Maintains area stocked with the necessary supplies and forms.

Acts as a role model and always maintains professional demeanor.
Develops and maintains clinical competency.
Maintains professional certifications and licensure in active status.
Maintains documentation of continuing education requirements.
Attends all mandatory in-services and departmental meetings.
Actively supports and participates in performance improvement activities.
Seeks/accepts training to learn new skills and maintain current competencies.
Practices within the guidelines and scope of a certified nursing assistant.
Displays courtesy toward customers by introducing self and addressing customer by name.
Meets customers’ expectation by listening to them, demonstrating sensitivity, and awareness of others.
Follows through to ensure that established expectations are satisfied; keep customers informed of progress.
Works effectively and cooperatively in groups/teams to ensure quality patient care.
Communicates effectively with manager and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
Attempts to resolve patient, physician, and visitor complaints and refers unresolved issues to managers.
Demonstrates dependability and reliability by promptly reporting to work when scheduled.
Serves as a mentor and role model.
