Job Description
American Traveler seeks an experienced RN with neuro and trauma experience for a Neuro Med-Surg Acute night shift assignment, requiring an active IL license and prior travel experience.
Responsibilities
- Work in a Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit within an acute care hospital setting
- Night shift, working three 12-hour shifts per week from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am
- Unit has 54 beds including 2 semi-private rooms, primarily serving patients with stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumors, head injury, and other neuroscience diagnoses
- Patient ratios are 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
- Nurses titrate heparin drips based on PTT and must have experience with heparin gtt
- Phillips telemetry monitors are used, with house-wide telemetry coverage—nurses are not required to interpret strips
- Epic EMR used—Epic experience preferred
- Float in rotation with regular staff, with assignments based on competency if floated outside the general unit
- Weekend requirement is every other weekend, with holiday rotation
- Charge nurse and house supervisor onsite 24/7, with charge nurse not carrying a patient assignment unless needed
- Support staff includes nurse aides and patient care techs, days/evenings ratio 1:9-10, nights 1:10-12
- Unit occasionally manages stable COVID-19 patients on high-flow oxygen
- Two days of orientation provided, including computer and unit-specific training with an educator and preceptor
- No scrub color required, but visible tattoos must be covered and only ear piercings are allowed while on duty
- No call or standby requirement
- COVID vaccination is not required for this assignment
- Local rates apply for clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles
Requirements
- Active IL RN license required at time of consideration—pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum of one year RN experience required
- Basic Life Support (BLS, AHA) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required
- Must have Level 1 trauma experience
- Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Must have previous travel RN experience—first time travelers not accepted
- Must have heparin drip titration experience
