Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro Med-Surg Acute position in Illinois requiring trauma and neuro unit experience.
Responsibilities
- Work in a 54-bed Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit within an acute care setting
- Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and neuroscience cases, with occasional medical overflow
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5-6 on nights
- Work schedule is 12-hour night shifts (1900-0700), three shifts per week, with every other weekend and holiday rotation
- Unit uses Epic EMR; prior Epic experience preferred
- Heparin titration required using PTT protocols; heparin gtt experience necessary
- House-wide telemetry system with Phillips monitors; nurses are not required to read telemetry strips
- Floating required within the general med-surg units; if floated outside general unit, responsibilities align with demonstrated competencies
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present on every shift; charge nurse only takes an assignment when needed for staffing
- Patient care techs assist nurses, particularly on days and evenings
- No specific scrub color required, but tattoos must be covered and only ear piercings are permitted
- Two-day orientation provided addressing unit specifics and computer training with educator and preceptor support
- COVID vaccination is not required for this position
- Local candidates are accepted and will receive local rates if residing within 50 miles
- Holiday coverage required on a rotating basis
Requirements
- Active IL RN license required at time of consideration
- Minimum 1 year of recent RN experience
- Previous travel nursing experience is required; no first-time travelers
- Experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Prior Level 1 trauma experience required
- Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
- Must be able to titrate heparin drips according to protocol
