Job Description

American Traveler seeks an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (Stepdown) position requiring a NE or compact RN license and strong titration skills.

Responsibilities

• Work in a 33-bed Progressive Care Unit (Stepdown) within an acute care hospital
• Patient population includes young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex medical issues
• Day shifts are 12 hours (0630-1900); every other weekend and holiday coverage required as needed
• Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:4 to 1:5
• RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin
• RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips; uses Epic EMR
• BiPAP and Airvo respiratory equipment are used on the unit
• Float required to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care units as needed
• Dress code requires navy blue scrubs
• The unit experiences a busy patient flow with frequent admissions and discharges, often occurring within a 6-hour window alongside shift changes
• Strong sense of teamwork and a positive attitude are essential for success on this unit
• Travelers participate in classroom orientation followed by two 12-hour shifts on the unit
• Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are available with a typical ratio of 1:10; coverage varies based on census
• Required up to 7 days of requested time off (RTO) must be submitted up front; additional RTO will not be approved
• Must be committed to providing a positive patient experience with bedside reporting and hourly rounding

Requirements

• Active NE or compact RN license is required at the time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
• Minimum 2 years of recent stepdown or progressive care experience required
• Current ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
• Must provide a driver's license for radius verification
• Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility; previous full-time, part-time, or PRN employees of CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facilities are not eligible
• Two references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years
• Pass a unit-specific, open-book exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%
• Artificial nails not permitted for patient care
