Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg night shift position in an acute care hospital, requiring strong telemetry and strip reading skills.
Responsibilities
- Work in a 32-bed Med/Surg unit with orthopedic, surgical, and oncology patients
- Acute care hospital setting with Level 1 trauma designation
- Most patients are surgical (80%), with the remainder oncology; frequent knee and hip cases under a JHACO-certified program
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4 for both days and nights
- Telemonitoring performed with GE monitors at a central monitoring station
- 12-hour night shifts with a requirement of four weekend shifts per four-week period; one major and one minor holiday coverage required
- Floating is required to Med/Surg Tele units B2C and B2D, as well as potentially to a sister facility
- Uses Cerner EMR
- Responsibilities include monitoring patients with post-surgical, orthopedic, oncology, and other specialized needs
- Support from a charge nurse (non-assigned), unit supervisor, and PCTs or Task RNs depending on shift
- RT and pharmacy services are available 24/7; SWAT nurse available for difficult IV starts
- Navy scrubs are required
- Travelers must complete floor-specific orientation (two shifts)
- Candidates may not have been directly employed by any facility associated with CommonSpirit Health or Dignity within the past year
- Must pass testing on sterile technique for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes on the first day; failure in testing may result in ineligibility for 6 months
- Spectralink phones are used, with call lights attached
- First to float among staff is required
Requirements
- Active AZ or compact RN license required at time of consideration; no pending licenses accepted
- Minimum 2 years of recent Med/Surg experience, with at least 6 months recent practice
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Ability to read telemetry strips and titrate amiodarone and cardizem down as needed
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam within two attempts and a pass/fail Sim Lab on the first day
- Experience with telemetry equipment and technology required
- Must be able to provide a current driver’s license; applicants cannot reside within 50 miles of the facility
- Must provide two professional references according to specification: one recent supervisor (within 12 months) and one peer or supervisor (within 3 years)
