Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit position with night shifts and a focus on trauma and neuro patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Work in an Intermediate Care/PCU unit within a hospital setting
  • Handles patient populations including trauma (Level II), cardiac, neuro, respiratory, and medical/surgical cases
  • Patient ratio is typically 1 RN to 3-4 patients per shift
  • Uses Cerner EMR with preference for prior Cerner experience
  • 12-hour night shifts from 7PM to 7AM with every other weekend required
  • Float to ED, ICU, or CCU may be required for intermediate level assignments in those departments
  • Unit staffed with CNA, resource nurse, RT, hospitalist, phlebotomy, and PT/OT support
  • Daily responsibilities include caring for trauma, neuro, respiratory, medical/surgical, and cardiac patients
  • Will manage cardiac, respiratory, neuro, and general surgical complications in a Level II trauma environment
  • Provide Q2H neuro checks for stroke and stable craniotomy patients
  • Charge experience is preferred; please indicate if you have held a charge role
  • Unit support includes 24/7 resource nurse and respiratory therapy, as well as phlebotomy and IV/VAT team support for certain procedures
  • General hospital orientation provided, followed by one unit-specific training day
  • May be scheduled for low census call-back depending on patient volumes
  • Flu vaccination is required for all assignments starting after 9/30/2024 unless medical exemption is granted
  • Professional scrubs of any color are permitted
  • Holiday coverage is based on unit needs and may be required

Requirements

  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • Minimum 1 year PCU or Intermediate Care RN experience required
  • If only Med/Surg experience, minimum 2 years with some PCU experience required
  • Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Must have experience with trauma, stroke, and Q2H neuro checks
  • Experience needed with cardiac rhythm interpretation, temporary pacemakers, post-femoral sheath care, cardiac drips (Amio, Cardizem), and titrating insulin drips
  • Must demonstrate skill in trach care, vents, high-flow O2, bipap, chest tubes, wound vacs, general drain/ostomy care, and IV starts
  • Cerner EMR experience highly preferred
  • Cannot have worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
  • Perm address must be 100+ miles south or southwest of Bangor, Maine to be eligible for travel rate
  • First-time travelers must have completed at least two 13-week travel assignments
