Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN Charge Nurse for a Med/Surg unit with telemetry monitoring and minimum one year of specialty experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a hospital-based Medical Surgical unit (non-surgical), caring for a diverse range of adult patients except primary cardiac cases
  • Unit features 44 private and semi-private rooms with a Level II Trauma Center environment
  • Typical patient diagnoses include stroke, COPD, respiratory illnesses, GI bleeds, renal failure, electrolyte imbalances, altered mental status, weakness, and non-operable fractures
  • Med-Tele patients are monitored with telemetry; nurses are expected to read and interpret rhythm strips
  • RN day shift ratio is 1:4-5 and night shift is 1:5-6, adjusted for acuity and tech support
  • Floating required to any area with Med/Tele patients as needed
  • Uses Cerner for charting (not required), Alaris pumps, and Pyxis medication management systems
  • Work schedule is 7A-7P, 12-hour day shifts with every other weekend rotation
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Holiday time off (RTO) is not approved at this time
  • Charge nurses generally do not have a direct patient assignment
  • Multidisciplinary team support includes CNAs, house supervisors, respiratory therapists, hospitalists, and therapy staff
  • Two days of hospital orientation followed by one shift on unit
  • Professional dress code; any color scrubs allowed, but crocs with holes and artificial nails are prohibited
  • Personal cell phone use is restricted except during breaks
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • RTO requests require manager approval
  • Free parking available in designated areas

Requirements

  • Active ME or Compact RN license required
  • Minimum of one year recent Med/Surg RN experience required; previous charge experience highly preferred
  • BLS certification required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and ACLS certification preferred
  • Proficiency in cardiac and insulin drip management, heparin drips, and general Med/Surg nursing skills (wound care, IV antibiotics, drain and tube management, IV starts, central line management, trach care, chest tube management)
  • Must be comfortable with telemetry monitoring and interpreting EKG/rhythm strips
  • Applicants must not have worked previously in a permanent capacity at any Northern Light Health Hospital
  • Candidates must reside 100+ miles South/Southwest of Bangor, ME to be considered
  • Flu vaccination required unless an approved medical exemption is provided
