Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Surgical ICU position in a Level 1 Trauma setting requiring night shifts and NE or compact licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Work in the adult Medical Surgical ICU within an acute care hospital
  • Unit has 34 beds and handles adult and pediatric patients ages 15 and above
  • Patient population includes neuro surgery, respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure (CRRT), general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, and complex surgical cases
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:1-2 in ICU and 1:4-5 in PCU
  • Required to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
  • Utilizes Draeger heart monitors and a centralized telemetry system; RNs must independently interpret cardiac strips
  • Works 12-hour night shifts (1830-0630)
  • Required to work every other weekend and as needed for holidays
  • Will float to all inpatient units except Maternity/NICU
  • Epic EMR system is used, and experience is preferred
  • RNs function as essential care team members and collaborate with attendings and student providers to deliver high quality care
  • Unit is fast-paced as the primary tertiary referral hospital for the system
  • Charge nurse present on every shift and responds to rapid response and code events
  • Nursing aides are available with a ratio of 1:18
  • Artificial nails are prohibited per infection prevention policy
  • Two shifts of unit-specific orientation provided
  • Navy blue scrubs are required
  • No tele/monitor techs; RNs are responsible for cardiac monitoring
  • Candidates must reside 50 miles or more from the facility to qualify
  • Up to 7 days of requested time off accepted per 13-week contract; additional RTO cannot be approved
  • Returning employees must not have worked for any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility in the past year

Requirements

  • Active NE or compact RN license required at time of consideration
  • Current ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications are required
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU nursing experience
  • Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips independently
  • Must pass a skills-based open-book exam with a score of 90% or higher during orientation
  • Driver's license required for verification of 50-mile radius eligibility
  • Must provide two professional references: one supervisor reference from the past 12 months, and one peer or supervisor reference from the past 3 years
  • May not have worked full time, part time, or PRN for any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity within the past year
