Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position working night shifts in a hospital setting with trauma and telemetry responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a large hospital with Level II Trauma Center, Neuro, Ortho, Oncology, Urology, and Med/Surg units
  • Float among multiple units including trauma surgical, neuroscience, oncology, clinical decision, orthopedics, and urology
  • Patient populations include general surgery, vascular, neurology, ortho/spine, urology, med/surg, oncology, and clinical decision care
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:5-6 depending on unit
  • Care for complex cases such as trauma, stroke, seizures, spinal injuries, joint replacements, fractures, and more
  • 12-hour night shifts with a start time of 7:00pm
  • Weekend requirement is every other weekend or four weekend days per month
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • EMR is Cerner (preferred experience)
  • Required to float to like units or patient locations as needed
  • Telemetry monitoring is performed by techs but RNs must interpret and confirm telemetry strips every 4 hours
  • Uses equipment such as Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Provide nursing care to diverse adult populations including trauma, surgical, neuro, ortho, oncology, and general med/surg patients
  • Must interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every four hours
  • Supportive team environment with CNAs, charge nurses, hospitalists, phlebotomy, and IV/VAT teams
  • Travelers will be assigned a home unit during orientation
  • A comprehensive orientation includes 24 hours classroom and 24 hours unit experience for new travelers or those absent for over a year
  • Scrubs of any color are permitted
  • Parking provided in designated parking deck levels
  • First-time travelers are welcome if all experience requirements are met
  • Holiday coverage may be required, with specific blackout dates when time off cannot be approved
  • No local candidates accepted within a 60-mile radius

Requirements

  • Active AL or compact RN license required
  • BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of recent Med/Surg experience required
  • At least 1 year of recent trauma/surgical experience required for applicable units
  • Experience with EPIC or Cerner EMR systems required
  • Telemetry experience required
  • Perm staff must wait six months after last shift to be considered as a traveler
  • Required skills include wound care, chest tubes, IV skills, NGT, medication administration, trach care, blood draws from central lines, and care for a variety of medical devices
