Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool night shift position requiring BLS and NIHSS certification and at least 18 months of recent MedSurg experience.

Responsibilities

• Work in a large hospital with multiple Med/Surg units including trauma surgical, neuroscience, med/oncology, clinical decision, orthopedics, and urology
• 12-hour night shifts (7:00pm–7:00am) with a 4-week scheduling cycle
• Float among like units and patient locations as needed, including MedSurg, ICUs, ER holds, and specialty MedSurg units
• Patient ratios of 1:5-6 depending on the unit
• Units have varying specialties such as trauma, surgery, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, and clinical decision
• Telemetry monitoring is performed by telemetry techs, with RNs required to interpret and confirm tele strips every 4 hours
• Epic or Cerner EMR experience is required or preferred, with Cerner as primary onsite system
• Weekend rotation involves every other weekend or four weekend days per month
• No on-call required
• Assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
• Support staff includes CNAs (1:6), charge nurses, phlebotomists, and IV/VAT teams
• Orientation consists of 24 hours classroom and 24 hours on-unit for new or returning travelers absent 1+ years
• Must be prepared to provide care for patients with complex needs including trauma, neuro, ortho, oncology, and med/surg
• Expected to work one major and one minor holiday per hospital policy
• First-time travelers are welcome with the required experience
• Chemo administration skills are highly preferred for oncology/MedSurg units
• No restrictions on scrub color; parking in hospital deck (levels 2–4)
• Some holiday and seasonal blackout dates for vacation time apply

Requirements

• Active AL or compact RN license in hand before start date
• Minimum 18 months of recent MedSurg experience required
• At least 1 year of trauma or surgical experience for trauma units
• Current BLS and NIHSS certifications are required
• Experience with wound care, chest tubes, NGT/PEG, IV skills, medication administration, and documentation
• Ability to interpret and confirm telemetry strips every 4 hours
• Experience with Cerner or Epic EMR required or preferred
• Must not have been employed at the facility within the last 6 months
• No locals permitted within a 60 mile radius
