Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced Med Surg RN for a night shift position in an acute hospital setting, requiring a WV or compact RN license and at least two years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Work on a 52-bed, all private room Med Surg unit within an acute care hospital setting
• Patient population includes ortho and neuro post-ops, general post-op, and a variety of medical diagnoses such as COPD, CHF, pneumonia, and cellulitis
• Hemodialysis patients are managed on the unit; peritoneal dialysis experience is highly preferred
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:6-7 on both day and night shifts
• CNA support provided at a ratio of 1:10-12
• 12-hour night shifts (1845-0715), scheduled every other weekend (3 out of 6 weekends in a schedule)
• Shift scheduling in 6-week blocks with up to 6 requests off per schedule allowed
• Holiday coverage included in rotation
• Floating required to other Med Surg and Med Surg/Oncology units, and possibly to IMC for Med Surg overflow only
• Remote telemetry is used as needed, with monitoring managed by another unit; RNs are not required to read strips
• Drips limited to heparin, rare Lasix (not continuous), PCAs, and possible Ativan gtt; no cardiac gtts or insulin
• Ventilator management limited to intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow oxygen therapy
• EMR system used is Allscripts Sunrise
• Provide comprehensive care for a diverse Med Surg patient population including complex post-op and medical cases
• Support and work alongside a fully staffed team, including 24/7 in-house hospitalist, IV, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and CNA support
• Orientation includes general hospital orientation plus two full shifts on the unit
• IV team initiates all IVs; RNs assess IV sites but do not start IVs on this unit
• Nurses are required to wear navy blue scrubs with navy scrub jackets; no hoodies allowed
• First time travelers are accepted
• Must work within assigned holiday rotation
• RTO requests capped at 6 per 6-week schedule
• Candidates can only be considered at one WVU facility at a time

Requirements

• Active WV or compact RN license required
• Minimum of 2 years recent Med Surg RN experience
• Basic Life Support (BLS AHA) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications are required
• Experience with peritoneal dialysis preferred
• Must submit a copy of an unexpired driver's license for consideration
• Must not reside within 50 miles of the facility (local traveler restrictions apply)
• Returning travelers must have a 2-year gap if previously employed at any WVU Medicine location and cannot cumulatively work more than one year as a traveler within WVU
• Must disclose any licensing ‘hits’ at time of consideration
