Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a fast-paced Med/Surg Telemetry position in California requiring a current CA RN license and strong cardiac rhythm interpretation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work in an acute care hospital setting on a mixed Med/Surg and Telemetry unit with 39 beds
  • Care for adult patients with acute and chronic medical conditions, post-surgical (including bariatrics and total joints), stroke, and non-titratable drips
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:4 for telemetry, 1:5 for Med/Surg, with mixed assignments possible
  • Use Cerner for EMR; Cerner experience preferred and comp test available for experienced users
  • Required to work 12-hour day shifts, including 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule
  • Travelers are the first to float, possibly between units within the hospital or to sister hospitals, and may care for Med/Surg patients in ICU or ER holds
  • Must be able to read and interpret all cardiac rhythms and work with Phillips cardiac monitors
  • Care includes handling set-rate Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Heparin drips, as well as patients on CPAP or BiPAP managed by RT
  • Care for a diverse patient population including high post-surgical volume and fast-paced admissions and discharges
  • Work within a supportive team structure including house supervisor, nurse managers, charge or break nurses, CNAs, RT, and pharmacy support available 24/7
  • Strict attendance policy; punctuality required for 7-7:30 shifts and daily AM huddles
  • Orientation will be 1-3 shifts depending on Cerner experience
  • Travelers are integrated into permanent staff holiday rotation and are expected to work one major and one minor holiday per contract
  • Navy blue scrubs required, with specific guidelines for jackets and undershirts
  • Any compromises in patient safety are not tolerated; high degree of professionalism required
  • First-time travelers accepted

Requirements

  • Active unencumbered CA RN license required at time of application
  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience in Med/Surg Telemetry nursing
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
  • Ability to read and interpret all cardiac rhythms is essential
  • Completion of a recent two-part reference check: one supervisor within last 12 months, one peer or supervisor within last 3 years
  • Experience with Cerner EMR preferred; competency testing as applicable
  • Must provide a copy of driver’s license for consideration
  • Candidates must not have been employed by CommonSpirit facilities including CHI and Dignity within the previous year
