Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric ICU position requiring a WI or compact RN license, PICU experience, and pediatric advanced certifications.

Responsibilities

• Work in an 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit within an acute care hospital setting
• Typical census is 4-5 patients with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:1 or 1:2 depending on acuity
• Common patient cases include respiratory, DKA, trauma (MVA, head injury, broken bones), post-surgical, neuro (seizure), overdoses, and suicide attempts
• Responsibilities include caring for intubated patients, managing IV drips, sedation, intracranial pressures (ICP), and EVDs; ECMO is not performed
• Nurses draw their own labs and are required to titrate cardiac, insulin, heparin, and sedation drips
• RNs must interpret and perform their own telemetry monitoring
• Unit uses Cerner EMR, with transition to Epic anticipated
• Respiratory equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, Nava, Vapotherm, and Heliox
• 12-hour night shifts with every other weekend and holiday required
• Self-scheduling in a tiered approach; block scheduling is not allowed
• Potential to float to Peds or, with relevant experience, to the NICU, and as observers in adult units depending on census
• No call or standby required
• No nurse aides are present on the unit; RNs work closely with residents who are present 24/7
• Pediatric intensivist is not in-house but available within 10 minutes
• Unit-specific orientation includes one day of hospital orientation and two days of unit orientation
• Clean, professional attire is required with pediatric-appropriate scrubs
• First-time travelers and travel duos are welcome; duos must work the same weekends but cannot have identical schedules
• Must clock in and out at facility
• Holiday coverage is every other holiday
• Local candidates (within 80 miles) are eligible but with a reduced pay rate

Requirements

• Active WI or compact state RN license (must be active by start date)
• Minimum of 1 year recent PICU RN experience required
• Current BLS and PALS certifications (AHA); TNCC preferred but not required
• Experience with intubated patients, titrating drips, sedations, ICP monitoring, and emergency situations
• Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips
• Familiarity with Cerner charting system preferred
• Must provide two professional references, including one from a supervisor
• Former permanent staff must have a separation of at least 6 months and may require hospital approval
