Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown IMU position requiring night shifts, strong telemetry skills, and a WV or compact RN license.
Responsibilities
- Position is in the Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) stepdown setting of an acute care hospital
- Unit has 30 beds, including 14 private and 16 semi-private rooms
- Typical patient ratios are 1:4-1:5, with occasional 1:6 assignments
- Patient population includes chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre- and post-cardiac cath, and overflow intermediate acuity patients
- RNs must interpret their own telemetry strips; Tele Techs are available
- Uses Allscripts Sunrise EMR
- Required to work 12-hour night shifts with scheduled weekends; must be on unit by 6:45 pm
- Self-scheduling available with up to 4 requested days off per month
- All staff may float to Tele or MedSurg units, with patient ratios up to 1:6 (Tele) or 1:7 (MedSurg, rarely); may also float to the Pandemic Unit
- Vent management is handled by RT, but RNs care for patients with advanced respiratory support
- IV team handles all IV starts; no PICC or midline insertion responsibility for RNs
- Charge nurses have patient assignments and clinical assistants provide support
- Common therapies and responsibilities include management of Tikosyn therapy and radial bands, but RNs do not pull sheaths
- First day orientation includes 4 hours with HR followed by 8 hours on unit with a preceptor, plus additional precepted shifts
- Pharmacy, IV, and RT support available onsite 24/7
- Navy blue scrubs required for this position
- Holiday shifts are rarely required for travelers, as permanent staff usually cover major holidays
- Pass/fail EKG testing may be required prior to start for stepdown positions
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Minimum 2 years of recent stepdown, intermediate, or telemetry acute care experience
- Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS required
- Proficiency in titrating drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, and Heparin
- Ability to interpret telemetry strips independently
- Experience with Allscripts Sunrise EMR preferred
- Must live at least 50 miles from the facility (local travelers not accepted)
- Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license for consideration
- Cannot have worked within the WVU Medicine system as a traveler or staff member within the last 2 years; travelers cannot exceed 1 year cumulative assignment with WVU Medicine
