Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced Med/Surg Float Pool RN with trauma or surgical experience and a valid AL or compact RN license.
Responsibilities
- Work in a large hospital setting with multiple Med/Surg units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Oncology, Ortho, Urology, and Clinical Decision Unit
- Assignments include general surgery, vascular, neuro, oncology, ortho, urology, and general Med/Surg patient populations
- Patient ratios are typically 1:5-6, varying by unit
- Use Cerner EMR (experience preferred), Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell, Spacelabs monitoring
- Telemetry is monitored by techs, but RNs must interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Float to like units and assist with Med/Surg, ICU, and ER as needed
- Shifts are 12 hours, 7a-7p and 7p-7a, on a 4-week scheduling cycle
- Every other weekend or 4 weekend days required each month
- No on-call responsibilities
- Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
- Responsibilities may include care of patients with tracheostomies, chest tubes, drains, ostomies, and complex wound management
- RNs are responsible for interpreting telemetry strips at least every 4 hours
- Support staff includes CNAs, charge nurses, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and monitoring techs
- Orientation includes 24 hours classroom and 24 hours unit time for new or returning travelers (after an absence of more than 1 year)
- Holiday coverage required according to hospital policy, including one major and one minor holiday
- Scrubs of any color are permitted
- First-time travelers with required Med/Surg experience are welcome
Requirements
- Active AL or compact RN license required
- Minimum 18 months recent Med/Surg experience required
- At least 1 year trauma or surgical experience for Trauma Surgical unit
- Current certifications in BLS and NIHSS required
- Experience with wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IVs, and medication administration required
- Returning travelers must have a 6-month gap since last shift at this facility
- Telemetry interpretation skills required
- Experience with Cerner EMR preferred
- No local candidates within a 60-mile radius will be considered
