Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Stepdown position in the Advanced Care Unit, requiring WV or compact licensure and strong telemetry and acute care skills.

Responsibilities

• Position is in an acute care hospital's 30-bed Advanced Care Unit (Stepdown), all private rooms
• Designated Stroke, Trauma, and Vascular unit with common diagnoses including fem-pop bypass, carotids, DKA, AKA, and post-cath with TR Bands and femoral access
• Patient ratio is typically 1:4
• Night shift, 12-hour shifts, with every other weekend required as scheduled
• Self-scheduling and block scheduling may be available depending on unit needs
• Required to float first; may float down to MedSurg/Tele or up to ICU for ACU status patients, but not to CVICU
• Monitor techs present, but RNs are responsible for reading, verifying, and signing off on telemetry strips
• Utilizes Epic EMR; Epic experience preferred
• Cpap, BiPAP, and High Flow oxygen equipment used on the unit
• RNs are responsible for titrating cardiac and insulin drips per provider orders
• Night charge nurse takes a patient assignment; 3 patient care techs per shift with 1:10 ratios
• First-day orientation includes HR and clinical educator, with shadowing and transition to independent practice by day three
• Must wear royal blue scrubs; scrub jackets permitted if they are actual scrub jackets—no hoodies or sweatshirts allowed
• Holiday coverage may be required based on unit needs
• Travelers are given first priority to float
• No local travelers allowed per facility rules (minimum distance requirements apply)
• RNs previously employed at any WVU Medicine location must have a two-year break before re-applying
• Assignment limited to cumulative one year within WVU system; requires a two-year break after that

Requirements

• Active WV or compact RN license required
• Minimum of 2 years recent stepdown acuity experience with the patient types specific to this unit
• Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
• Certifications required: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), and NIHSS
• Experience titrating drips including Cardizem (as ordered), insulin, and heparin
• Unexpired driver’s license must be submitted for consideration
• Pass/fail EKG testing may be required depending on location
