Responsibilities
Neonatal intensive care units are classified as either level I, II, III, or IV nurseries, with level I NICUs caring mostly for healthy, full-term babies and level IV NICUs handling severely ill or early neonates often requiring surgical interventions. The duties of NICU nurses range from the stabilization of mostly healthy infants to the intensive care of critically ill preterm neonates. Candidates for neonatal ICU nursing jobs should have a comprehensive understanding of the criteria for infants admitted to the NICU including low birth weight and preterm delivery. They must also be able to address neonatal conditions including heart problems, infections, and birth defects. Clinical experience caring for multiples is important as twins and triplets are often admitted to the NICU. Finally, NICU nurses must have an excellent grasp of current advanced technology and equipment used in neonatal medicine in order to provide the highest level of care.Requirements
- 1+ year of recent experience in this specialty and setting
- Valid nursing license as required by this state
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through AHA recommended and may be required
- Specialty-related certifications are preferred and may be required
