Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position requiring a GA or compact RN license and strong clinical skills.

Responsibilities

• Position is in the Admission Discharge Transition Unit of a teaching hospital with Level 1 Trauma designation
• 16-bed unit with an average census of 16 patients
• Patient caseload includes chest pain, COPD exacerbations, heart failure, dehydration, post-operative care, and patients awaiting inpatient admission
• RN-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4-6
• 12-hour day shifts from 7AM to 7PM
• Required to work 5-6 weekend shifts out of every 12 in a 6-week schedule
• Holiday coverage required: one shift of each major holiday
• No on-call responsibilities
• Floating to all adult med/surg and telemetry units in the hospital is required
• Uses Epic for EMR, Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, and Philips monitors
• Responsibilities include care coordination, rapid turnover using admission/discharge protocols, and interdisciplinary teamwork
• Support available from CNAs, unit secretary, charge nurses, phlebotomy, PICC team, resource nurses, RT, hospitalists, and intensivists
• Central Telemetry Unit monitors patients
• One day facility orientation and two days department orientation provided
• Navy scrubs are required for RNs
• High patient turnover and busy unit environment with strong team culture
• First-time travelers are accepted for this position
• Manager approval is required for time-off requests

Requirements

• Active GA or compact RN license
• Minimum of 2 years recent Med/Surg Tele RN experience
• Associate's degree or higher in Nursing
• Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
• Strong skills in cardiac monitoring, IV insertion and maintenance, trach care, chest tube management, insulin and heparin drips, and cardiac telemetry interpretation
• Ability to complete a Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) test during onboarding
• Experience with Epic EMR is required
• Discharge planning and patient education experience is preferred
