Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a night shift Emergency Department role requiring a WI or compact license and proficiency with ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications.
Responsibilities
- Work in the Emergency Department of an acute care setting
- Night shifts, 12 hours (7:00pm - 7:00am)
- Expected nurse to patient ratio is 1:3-4
- Unit features 7 beds plus a triage area, with ED and urgent care combined
- Care for a variety of patients including cardiac, diabetic, stroke, respiratory, and wound cases, with frequent transfer of specialty cases
- Bedside triage with no designated triage nurse
- ED holds are intermixed within the department; transfers for specialty care as needed
- No separate psych or seclusion rooms and no in-house security, but panic button linked to 911 is available
- 30-40 patients expected daily in a new facility
- Must float between ED and inpatient unit as needed, with potential to assist at a similar nearby site
- Must be able to assist with inpatient MS if needed
- Cerner EMR in use, transitioning to Epic
- Block scheduling with q3rd weekend and holiday requirements
- Orientation includes 3 shifts at a sister facility and paperwork/CBT completion
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to a mixed emergency patient population
- Responsible for performing vital procedures, bedside triage, lab and IV draws, and reading EKGs
- Support team includes one ED provider 24/7, a PA during the day, and an ED/HUC tech to assist with patient care and labs
- RNs are responsible for respiratory interventions, including troubleshooting and monitoring vent equipment
- Charge nurse takes patient assignments; team size is two RNs per shift, with an extra RN certain days
- No respiratory therapist on site—RNs handle related responsibilities
- Solid color scrubs required, likely transitioning to navy blue
- Expected to work every third weekend and major winter holidays
- Initial orientation includes shifts at a sister facility and on-site training before the new facility opens
- Must complete all onboarding and orientation paperwork and CBTs
- First week of training may require day shifts, though the position is primarily nights
Requirements
- Active WI or compact RN license required by start date
- Minimum 2 years recent ED nursing experience in a similar setting
- Certifications required: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), PALS (AHA)
- Strongly preferred: TNCC, ENPC, NRP
- Experience working with limited resources and ability to handle responsibilities typical for a smaller or critical access hospital
- Must be comfortable reading own strips using GE monitors
- Ability to assist with intubation, transport vents, and monitoring during patient transfer
- Must be willing to float to medical-surgical (MS) inpatient unit
- Two professional references required, including one from a supervisor and one from a peer or supervisor
- Former perm staff must have not worked at the facility for at least 6 months and require hospital approval
- Local candidates are those living within 80 miles and may be eligible at a reduced rate
